Running the Nestling week
This page shows how to approve the week’s tasks, pay the allowance, and record where the money went.
Both parents can do everything on this page. Use it once a week, on the approval day.
An allowance is money a kid gets every week from the household. For example, €10 every Sunday. A household task is a small, regular job the kid agrees to do each week. For example, feeding the cat.
Approving the week
Section titled “Approving the week”When the kid finishes a task, the kid taps I did it! on the device. You can also mark a task yourself.
- Open Nestling, then select the kid. A kid whose tasks are all marked shows Week ready to approve.
- Check the tasks under This week. To mark one for the kid, select Mark done. To remove a mark, select Undo.
- If every task is marked, select Approve and pay. The week shows Paid, and Give, Spend and Save go up.
The money is split as the contract says, and the match is added to Save. A match is money the parents add on top of the Save part. For example, a 20% match on €5 for Save adds €1.
An approved week cannot be undone, and each week can be paid only once. Nothing is taken from your bank account: you hand the money over when the kid uses it.
When not every task is done
Section titled “When not every task is done”- If you agree the week was a near miss, select Pay this week anyway. The week is paid in full and marked as paid anyway.
- If you decide not to pay, select Don’t pay this week. Nothing is paid.
A streak is the number of weeks in a row the kid’s week was approved. For example, 4 weeks in a row. The streak goes up with every approved week. It starts again only when the kid marked tasks and you chose Don’t pay this week. A week nobody touched leaves the streak where it was, and so does pausing the contract.
You can still approve a past week for up to 8 weeks.
Recording where the money went
Section titled “Recording where the money went”Give, Spend and Save keep growing until you empty them. Empty one when the money leaves in real life: the kid gives a gift, buys something, or the savings move to a bank account.
- On the kid’s page, select Empty under Give, Spend or Save. The dialog Empty the Give pocket (or Spend, or Save) opens with the full amount filled in.
- To empty only part, change the amount. Nestling does not accept more than is there.
- Choose where the money went. Give is always given to someone in need, and Spend is always spent. For Save, choose Moved to a savings account, Moved to an investment account or Cashed out.
- If the money went to a real account, type the transaction number from your Transactions list in Bank transaction number (optional).
- Select Empty pocket. The amount goes down, and the entry appears under Activity for both parents.
Emptying cannot be undone. To correct a mistake, add the amount back with Bonus on the kid’s page; only the owner can add a bonus.
The forest on the kid’s device counts everything ever saved. Emptying Save never makes trees disappear.
Getting a notification
Section titled “Getting a notification”If Notify me appears on the Nestling page, select it on each phone or computer where you want a notification when the kid marks a task. On an iPhone or iPad, first add Nestbalm to the Home Screen. Each parent turns it on separately.
